He was born to his parents named Ida Mae Taylor (Mother) and Namie Taylor (Father). He grew up with three siblings named Nimia Taylor (Sister), Councilor Taylor (Brother) and Emerald Taylor (Sister).

Johnnie Taylor released his single ‘Somewhere to Lay My Head’ and he did so on Chicago’s Chance Records Label in the 1950s as a part of the gospel group Highway QCs. In 1957, he was hired to take a place in the gospel group Soul Stirrers. In 1962, he formed his own record label called ‘SAR Records’. In 1966, he moved to Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was nicknamed ‘The Philosopher of Soul’. He later released the hit songs ‘I’ve Got to Love Somebody’s Baby’ and ‘Who’s Making Love’ which reached No. 5 position on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.

Taylor appeared in the 1973 documentary film ‘Wattstax’. In 1975, he moved to Columbia Records and he released his biggest song titled ‘Disco Lady’. In May, 1976, Disco Lady was certified Platinum and it sold over 2 million copies. He later moved to Malaco Records. In 1996, he released his eighth album titled ‘Good Love!,. He released his final song titled ‘Soul Heaven’ which featured music legends like Louis Amstrong, Otis Redding, Z.Z Hills, The Notorious B.I.G. and many others. In the 1980’s, he worked as a DJ on KKDA, a radio station in Dallas.
