She worked at restaurants in Boston, Massachusetts and New York City and she took an apprenticeship with Master Chef Maurice Cazalis of the Henri IV Restaurant. From 1981 until 1983, she was the chef tounant at La Tulipe, a restaurant in New York City. In 1982, she co-founded the New York Women’s Culinary Alliance.

Moulton worked for two years as an instructor at Peter Kump’s New York Cooking School, which is now known as the Institute of Culinary Education. In 1984, she began to work in the test kitchen at Gourmet. In 1979, she was hired to work behind the scenes on Julia Child & Company, a cooking program on PBS. She later worked at Good Morning America. She later began to host the Food Network show Cooking Live.

Her second book titled ‘Sara’s Secrets for Weeknight Meals’ was published in October 2005.
