Ronny Chieng was born Ronny Xin Yi Chieng on the 21st of November, 1985 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia and he was born to a Malaysian Chinese family but he was raised in Manchester, New Hampshire, United States and he also spent some part of his early days in Singapore.

Chieng attended the Yuhua Primary School, he later enrolled at the Pioneer Junior College, which is located in Singapore, he then went on to attend the University of Melbourne which is where he graduated with in 2009 with a Bachelors of Commerce and Bachelors of Laws degrees, he also attended the Australian National University and graduated in 2012 with a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
