As a High School football player, he made 62 passes for 945 yards and 13 touchdowns. He continued his football career at University of California, Berkeley and he also played basketball while at the University. Gonzalez was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1997 NFL Draft. After a successful season, he was named to the NFL All-Rookie team. In the 2010 NFL Draft, he was traded for the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a second-round pick. His first game as a Falcons player was against Miami Dolphins and he had a good game.
